A View of Our Beautiful Area From Overlook Mountain's Fire Tower
This view is looking north towards some of the eastern Catskills into Greene
County. On the left is Indian Head Mountain (3573 ft/1088 m).
Just as the southwestern Catskills, around Sullivan and southern Ulster
Counties,
became known as the "Borscht Belt" for their many hotels catering principally
to a Jewish clientele, the northeastern Catskills are often referred to as the
"Irish Catskills" for their large population of Irish descent. The Durham area
contains an Irish-American museum and hosts several Irish and Celtic-themed
festivals each year.
