A View of Our Beautiful Area From Overlook Mountain's Fire Tower
This view is looking east towards the Hudson River, but is mostly blocked by
the rest of the summit of Overlook Mountain. One characteristic of the Catskills
is that its mountains often have fairly flat tops; this is due to their being
the remnants of a plateau (a "dissected plateau" in geological terms) that
began as a fairly flat delta coming off the Taconic Mountains to the east
(see Geology of the Catskills for more
information). Visible through the trees is the forest ranger's cabin, shed, and
outhouse. In the foreground is a fireplace for visitors to cook on. Several
picnic tables are not shown in this photograph.
